The student union facilities make up only one piece of all the available child-care possibilities, which let you bring together child and studies or work. Jena was recently recognized in the family atlas of Germany as one of the most family friendly cities. The educational work in the child-care facilities is based on the needs and interests of the children.
Therefore, there is a big emphasis on free play and work in small groups. Having a good and trusting relationship with parents is also highly valued. The student union runs three facilities in Jena, with a capacity of about 220 children in each center. As a rule, the children must at least be 13 months old before they can be accepted into the program. The facilities are located near to the city and are predominantly intended for the children of student parents. The child care centers offer student friendly hours of operation, open from 6:30am until 5:30pm. Child care in the evening can also be arranged on an individual basis. The student union is responsible for accepting new children into the program. Program costs are based on a sliding scale according to the income of the parents.
