Starting a family in paradise – studying with a child

It has been a long time since the days when Adam and Eve were the only two people around. In our paradise, you can see a lot of round bellies, telling us that the birth rate in Jena is on the rise. Jena was just recently certified in the family atlas for its exemplary services to help people unify their family and work lives. The same principle can be applied to unifying family life with a course of studies. We came up with all kinds of ideas.

Diapers at the speed of light

Recently at the college of applied sciences, a lovely new baby changing room and lounge has been offered, where you can even warm up sip-cups and milk. In the Mensa at the Ernst-Abbe-Platz, as well as in the student union on Philosophenweg, we offer our “little students” diaper and play corners. The university, unfortunately, has too small of a baby changing room. But to make up for it, we have big plans: there will be diaper tables built into all restrooms with enough space. Furnished with corresponding signs, the changing rooms will soon be open for young mothers and fathers, who are underway with their children in the buildings of the FSU.

Made in Jena – A welcome to student children

We think that it is a good time to have children during one’s course of studies. With non-bureaucratic possibilities for a leave of absence, new part-time offers for students pursuing their bachelors, and excellent child care possibilities in Jena, many of the basic needs for Schiller’s dwarves are already taken care of. With all of these offers, you will notice that your little ones make us happy, and that we want to welcome your children, even before the Kids University lights up their eyes.   Since January 1 st , 2008, every newborn child is greeted by the university with a welcome packet (if you are one of these little ones, then simply send your mother or father to the FSU student services center with their THOSKA card and your birth certificate).

Childcare: good, better, best

Your term paper or final thesis is waiting for you at home. And somehow unforeseen, it suddenly has to be finished very soon. Or the large lecture hall is only open between 7 and 9 o’clock. But instead of in the morning, it’s only open at the other end of the day. Or, or, or. What to do? Student parents need a special sort of child care. Because of this, new child care offers are planned in the child facilities of the student union. Some of the things up for discussion are evening child care (until 9pm), and short-time child care possibilities throughout the city, provided by interns in their pre-study practicum for the teacher training program. We are also talking about extending the “day mother” and “honorary grandmother” programs through the family center and the city. In the meantime, we are trying to determine the amount of demand for these programs. It would be nice if you help us out and send us your time-budget. Maybe we can already help you with a concrete child care offer.

Living with a child

Everything is so much easier together. This is especially true for the students who don’t have a grandmother who can help out. Therefore, we want to make you housing offers, especially designed for families. One of the residence halls, managed by the student union, will soon be declared as the family residence hall. If you think that it would be a good deal to live in affordable housing in close proximity to other student parents, then you should introduce yourself and your child at the INFOtake of the student union on campus. Of course, an email will also do the job.

„I'm hungry“, yelled the little bear. "Where do I get the honey from?"

Nothing is easier than that. The student union has now established the children’s card. Come into the Mensa or Cafeteria for lunch. When you buy your meal, your little dwarf under 6 years also gets lunch, and it’s for free. You can get a children’s card at the student union in the INFOtake on campus.
