Jena's cultural landscape

Jena's cultural scene has developed into a diverse cultural landscape. It reflects the care of a city, which is rich with art and university tradition. At the same time, the cultural scene has the potential for innovation, which is characteristic of Thuringia.

After 1785, the Saale city experienced its classical period, mostly thanks to development through the poet and minister, Goethe. Scientific facilities like the botanical garden, the mineralogical collection, the university library and various scientific institutions came into being through his proposal and instructions. Prominent personalities were called to Jena on his recommendation. One of the most famous professors was Friedrich Schiller, who lived and worked in Jena 1789 - 1799 and formed a friendship with Goethe during his years in Jena. In this classical period, the city evolved into one of the most important intellectual centers of Germany. Jena became the main city of the German philosophy and the early German Romantic.

Today you can find an attractive and modern cultural landscape in Jena, along with technical and natural sciences, literature, and art history museums. Thus the KulturArena brings international stars to Jena, and the Jena theater house, the Jena art association and the Jena philharmonic orchestra have something to offer for every taste.
