The geographical location in the middle of Germany, the direct connection to the motorway network, and the Intercity-Express railway lines are all strategic advantages for Jena. In the municipal area there are two motorway interchanges onto the A4 (Dresden – Frankfurt a.M.). Via the nearby motorway intersection, Hermsdorfer Kreuz, there is a direct connection to the A9 motorway (Berlin – Nürnberg). The rail network and the Intercity-Express train station (Hamburg – Berlin – Munich) connect Jena with all of the European capitals and big cities. The Jena-Schöngleina traffic airfield is also open to business travellers, amateur pilots, and tourists alike. The next commercial airports are located in Erfurt and in Leipzig/Halle.
Furthermore, Jena is inspired by its attractive surroundings. Located on the Saale river, surrounded by mountains and cliffs, Jena comes alive through its extraordinarily beautiful location. The city, nestled in an almost Mediterranean landscape, with limestone hills up to 400m high, has a variety of bicycle paths as well as an attractive hiking region. Beloved destinations in the region include the classical city of Weimar, the state capital Erfurt, the Dornburg Castles, the pottery town Bürgel, and the middle age Leuchtenburg.
