Impressions of Jena
"Forget everything you associate with Jena if you have only seen it from highway A4", Marlis Heinz wrote in her report with the title "views of Jena" (source: Die Welt, Sept. 13, 2008).
Jena is "a ring of mountains with the city nestled between them in the Saale river valley. The historical city center is surrounded by renovated industrial areas and new buildings, shiny facades next to old walls. Above the remnants of the city fortress, it rises up above honorable old towers and facades with placards listing the name of famous students."
Jena is a city of students. "Without the 25,000 some young people, the city of 100,000 would indeed have fewer bars/pubs, but also less culture, fewer cyclists and less fun," the journalist notes.
